UN fact-finding mission must have full access and investigate reported extrajudicial executions in Darfur

7 april 2004

Amnesty International is urging the UN fact-finding mission into Chad and
Darfur, western Sudan, to investigate the extrajudicial execution of 168
men near Deleij in Wadi Saleh between 5 and 7 March 2004.

The fact-finding mission headed by Bacre Waly Ndiaye, head of the
Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York, is to
investigate the human rights situation in Darfur where government-aligned
militias have killed people, devastated villages and caused what UN
spokespeople have described as "ethnic cleansing".

Attacks on farm workers and their children must end now

5 april 2004

Workers on the farm of opposition MP for Chimanimani, Roy Bennett,
including children as young as 8 years old, are being targeted in a series
of violent attacks by state agents and ruling party supporters. Since the
beginning of 2004, men, women and children have been assaulted, two women
have been raped and one man has been killed.

Despite repeated appeals by Amnesty International the
Zimbabwean government has failed to act in the majority of cases.

"The Zimbabwean authorities should take immediate steps to end

Israel must facilitate, not hinder, relief for the occupied population

2 april 2004

Amnesty International today expressed deep concern for the health and
well-being of some 600,000 refugees in the Gaza Strip, and called on Israel
to immediately lift unlawful and disproportionate restrictions on movement
which are hampering relief efforts by humanitarian organizations.

Yesterday the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA)
announced that it had stopped distribution of emergency food aid to the
refugees following restrictions introduced by Israeli authorities at the
sole commercial crossing through which UNRWA can bring in humanitarian
assistance.

Geweld tegen vrouwen neemt toe

31 maart 2004

Respect human rights during the National Convention

31 maart 2004

The human rights situation in Myanmar remains serious, a new report
published by Amnesty International today reveals. There are an estimated
1300 -- 1400 political prisoners, many of them prisoners of conscience; and
political arrests continue in the run-up to the National Convention.

"Arbitrary arrests; torture and ill-treatment during
incommunicado detention; unfair trials; and laws which greatly curtail the
rights to freedom of expression and assembly are major obstacles to any
improvement in Myanmar's human rights record," Amnesty International said.

"On a daily basis human rights defenders in Belarus face obstacles in exercising their rights to freedom of association and assembly as well as violations of their right to receive and impart information about human rights," Amnesty International said.

Refugee and Human Rights Organisations across Europe call on EU to scrap Key Asylum Proposal

29 maart 2004

(Brussels 29 March 2004) In an unprecedented move, refugee and human rights organisations across Europe are jointly calling on the European Union to scrap one of the key elements leading to the proposed Common European Asylum System.
The organisations are concerned that proposals to designate certain countries as “safe countries of origin” or “safe third countries,” and the absence of a guaranteed right for all asylum seekers to remain in a country of asylum pending an appeal, violate EU Member States’ international obligations.

The international community must uphold its human rights responsibilities

26 maart 2004

Afghanistan is facing a critical moment in its ongoing reconstruction
efforts and its future will remain unchanged unless the international
community takes human rights issues seriously, said Amnesty International
in a letter sent today to the countries participating in a forthcoming
international conference on reconstruction assistance to Afghanistan.

"We have seen some positive steps emerging, such as the building of a
professional police force, training of the judiciary, police and lawyers,
legal reform and physical rehabilitation of prisons and courts in Kabul,"
