'We are not dirt': Forced evictions in Egypt's informal settlements

More than 12 million people live in Egypt’s sprawling informal settlements (slums). Over the years, the authorities have treated these people with contempt, subjected them to unlawful forced evictions and threatened them with arbitrary arrest under repressive emergency legislation if they dared to protest. The dramatic political changes that have happened since 25 January 2011 offer the new Egyptian authorities an historic opportunity to genuinely consult slum-dwellers about their housing, and to work with them to create a brighter and safer future.

Nigeria: 'Just move them': Forced evictions in Port Harcourt, Nigeria

In Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, thousands of people have been forcibly evicted from their homes in the city's waterfronts and adjoining districts as state authorities push through large-scale redevelopment plans. This short report documents the failures by the government of Rivers State to put in place legal protections and other safeguards against forced eviction for all affected communities, such as adequate prior consultation and notice on evictions, adequate alternative accommodation and compensation, and effective remedies. The report also highlights the excessive use of force employed by Nigerian security forces.

Nigeria: Port Harcourt demolitions: Excessive use of force against demonstrators

On 12 October 2009, armed security forces opened fire on a crowd of people peacefully protesting against the proposed demolition of their homes in Bundu community, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. At least twelve people were shot and seriously injured. The total number of dead remains unknown. A year later, no investigation has been carried out. Amnesty International is calling on the government of Nigeria to set up an independent commission of inquiry to investigate the use of force and firearms by the police and the Joint Task Force (JTF) at Bundu waterfront.

Israel and Occupied Palestinian Territories: As safe as Houses? Israel’s demolition of Palestinian homes

Palestinians living under Israeli occupation in East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank face such tight restrictions on what they can build that their rights to adequate housing is being violated. The Israeli authorities condemn as "illegal" homes and other structures built without permits that they control and rarely allow to Palestinian residents, and then order their destruction. Demolition crews, accompanied by security officials, may arrive at any time, giving families little notice or opportunity to remove their possessions.

Papua New Guinea: Undermining Rights: Forced evictions and police brutality around the Porgera gold mine, Papua New Guinea

On 27 April 2009, police forcibly evicted villagers living alongside the Porgera gold mine in Papua New Guinea. Families were forced to flee from their homes as police burned down their houses. The government of Papua New Guinea provided no alternative housing to those affected and many of the families from the area now depend on their relatives and friends for shelter and food. This report urges the government of Papua New Guinea to carry out a full investigation into the forced evictions and police violence, prosecute those responsible, and provide remedies to those affected.

Buried Alive; Trapped by Poverty and Neglect in Cairo’s Informal Settlements

Op 6 oktober 2008 werd de Al-Duwayqa sloppenwijk in Cairo getroffen door een rotsverschuiving. Volgens de autoriteiten kwamen 107 mensen om het leven en raakten 58 mensen gewond. Volgens de overlevenden lag de tol nog veel hoger. Na de rotsverschuiving sloopte de Egyptische overheid meer dan duizend bedreigde huizen.
