    Israël: ernstig gewonde Palestijnse betoger krijgt medische zorg

    Op 16 april oordeelde het Israëlische Hooggerechtshof dat de jonge Palestijnse journalist Yousef al-Kronz de Gazastrook mocht verlaten. Hij had dringend medische zorg nodig in een ziekenhuis in Ramallah op de Westelijke Jordaanoever.

    Sudan: vrijlating van politieke activisten is hun recht, geen geschenk

    De Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir heeft 56 activisten van de oppositie vrijgelaten nadat zij 84 dagen hebben vastgezeten. Zij waren opgesloten vanwege hun steun aan protesten tegen gestegen voedselprijzen en gezondheidskosten.

The Indigenous Kichwa People of Sarayaku (Pueblo Originario Kichwa de Sarayaku) of Ecuador is campaigning for their right to be consulted, including their right to consent, regarding development projects that affect them. Some time ago, the government authorized a company to enter their ancestral land and drill for oil without having consulted with Sarayaku beforehand. Sarayaku’s case is representative of the case of many other Indigenous communities across the Americas. But they have gone a step farther. Having exhausted all judicial avenues at home, they have taken their case to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. The Court’s forthcoming ruling will send a strong message to the Ecuadorian government and to all governments across the region. Amnesty International is supporting Sarayaku’s campaign to defend their own rights and the rights of many other communities across the Americas. Governments must consult with Indigenous people before carrying out development projects which may affect their lives.

    Ecuador: Landrechtenactiviste krijgt bescherming

    De Ecuadoriaanse landrechtenactiviste Patricia Gualinga wordt niet langer bedreigd. Zij krijgt nu bescherming. Dat gebeurde nadat Amnesty een wereldwijde spoedactie voor haar had uitgezet. De actie volgde nadat een man stenen door de ramen van Gualinga’s huis had gegooid, terwijl hij doodsbedreigingen riep.

    Tsjaad: Activist Mahadine vrijgelaten

    Op 5 april 2018 is Tadjadine Mahamat Babouri – beter bekend als Mahadine - in Tsjaad vrijgelaten. De mensenrechtenverdediger was op 30 september opgepakt, nadat hij op social media enkele video’s had geplaatst waarin hij de regering van Tsjaad bekritiseerde vanwege economisch wanbeleid.

    Polen: vervolging van journalist gestaakt

    Onderzoeksjournalist Tomasz Piątek uit Polen wordt niet langer vervolgd. Hij publiceerde een boek over ex-minister van Defensie Antoni Macierewicz, waarin hij hem beschuldigde van het onderhouden van banden met de Russische geheime dienst.

  • Amnesty International Zimbabwe activists march through the capital Harare to peacefully protest against the death penalty on World Day Against the Death Penalty. Events took place in the city that day including a rally under the title - Time to abolish the death penalty in Zimbabwe. Justice minister Emerson Mnangagwa spoke at the rally. Death Penalty Day that falls on October 10 every year, is meant to encourage states to adopt the principle that ‘the use of the death penalty undermines human dignity’.
