Take action for women activists
Propaganda, lies, libel campaigns… These are some of the power moves that governments around the world use to smear people who stand up for human rights. Female activists are particularly vulnerable – based on who they are and what they do. Their activities are often at odds with traditions and ideas around how women should behave.
When they threaten me, they say they will kill me but only after raping me first. They never say that to my male colleagues.
Support women activists
Amnesty International and Wikimedia are collaborating to support women activists. A Wikipedia page will give these women a face and bring attention to their important work. For this reason, Amnesty is organising a Wiki-a-thon on Friday 1 March. One week later on Saturday 9 March, Wikimedia is organising a similar writing gathering. You can register by using the form at the bottom of this page.
Participate in the Wiki-a-thon
Friday 1 March, Amnesty House Amsterdam
On 1 March 2019 during the Wiki-a-thon, we will make as many Wikipedia pages as possible (in English or Dutch) for women activists. By participating, you will make a meaningful contribution to the work of women activists – while getting a behind-the-scenes look at Amnesty’s work. We’ll also provide some tasty food and drink, and give a short presentation on how to write a good Wikipedia article.
When: 1 March 2019, from noon to 8pm
Where: Amnesty House, Keizersgracht 177, Amsterdam
Attending at different times is possible. And of course, you don’t have to be there all day!

Saturday 9 March, Wikimedia Utrecht
On Saturday 9 March, Wikimedia in Utrecht will organise a Wiki-a-thon for women human rights activists. This involves writing a Wikimedia article describing the work they do to improve human rights in their country.
The day begins with an introduction to Wikipedia. Advisors will also be on hand.
The Wiki-a-thon takes place from 11.30am to 4.30pm at the Social Impact Factory (Vredenburg 40, Utrecht), which is close to the Utrecht Centraal train station. Lunch and drinks are included.
The WikiConNL conference will take place in tandem with the Wiki-a-thon. However, registering for the Wiki-a-thon will not get you access to the conference (you will have to register for that separately).
