Amnesty International USA: Pompeo Commits to Follow Law on Torture

NEW YORK – Following the first day of CIA nominee Rep. Mike Pompeo’s confirmation hearing, Amnesty International USA executive director Margaret Huang released the following statement:

“It’s significant that Rep. Pompeo publicly committed to abide by the law and reject orders to torture. That commitment must remain steadfast if he is confirmed to lead the CIA.

“It’s worth nothing that, when asked, all of President-elect Trump’s nominees before the Senate have gone on the record against the use of torture. All have, in varying terms, acknowledged the illegality of torture. When the rhetoric meets reality in a Trump administration, it will be crucial that those who’ve spoken out against torture this week don’t waver.”

Amnesty continues to have concerns about human rights violations stemming from the use of torture as well as rendition and secret detention – two areas that did were not addressed in this week’s hearings.
