Verklaring Amnesty International Nederland over onderzoek Oekraïne-persbericht

Amnesty International Nederland heeft afgelopen vrijdag kennisgenomen van een publicatie in de New York Times. Hierin worden de bevindingen van een externe onderzoekscommissie naar buiten gebracht. Deze onafhankelijke commissie deed onderzoek naar de totstandkoming van het Oekraïne-persbericht van 4 augustus 2022.

Sinds augustus vorig jaar heeft Amnesty Nederland bij het Internationaal Bestuur aangedrongen op dit onafhankelijke onderzoek. Ook hebben wij snel na het verschijnen van het Oekraïne-persbericht duidelijk gemaakt dat wij grote zorgen hadden over de onzorgvuldigheden in het persbericht, de impact op onze organisatie en onze Oekraïense collega’s.

Amnesty Nederland heeft het afgelopen jaar meermaals bij het Internationaal Bestuur van de organisatie aangedrongen om de uitkomsten van het externe onderzoek te delen met nationale afdelingen. Daar heeft het Internationaal Bestuur geen gehoor aan gegeven. De publicatie in de New York Times was de eerste keer dat Amnesty Nederland kennis kon nemen van dit onafhankelijke onderzoek.

Vandaag heeft Amnesty Nederland in een brief aan het Internationaal Bestuur met klem aangedrongen om de uitkomsten van dit externe onderzoek volledig en zonder voorbehouden te accepteren. Om te zorgen dat het geschonden vertrouwen in het werk van Amnesty kan worden hersteld is onmiddellijke opheldering van alle nog openstaande vragen nodig.

Alleen door volledige openheid van zaken te bieden over de totstandkoming van het persbericht van augustus vorig jaar kan een begin worden gemaakt met het herstel van vertrouwen. Amnesty Nederland is in afwachting van een reactie van het Internationaal Bestuur.

Statement by Amnesty International Netherlands on investigation into Ukraine press release

Last Friday, Amnesty International Netherlands became aware of a publication in the New York Times. This article presented the findings of an external investigation committee to the public. This independent committee conducted an investigation into the Ukraine press release of 4 August 2022.

Amnesty International Netherlands has been urging the International Executive Board to perform this independent investigation since August of last year. We also made clear soon after the publication of the Ukraine press release that we had major concerns about the inaccuracies contained in the release as well as the impact of this on our organisation and our Ukrainian colleagues.

Over the past year, Amnesty International Netherlands has repeatedly urged the organisation’s International Executive Board to share the results from the external study with national chapters. The International Executive Board did not respond to these requests. The publication in the New York Times was the first time Amnesty International Netherlands was made aware of this independent research.

Today, in a letter to the International Executive Board, Amnesty International Netherlands stressed the need for the results of this external investigation to be accepted in their entirety and without reservation. In order to ensure that the breached trust in Amnesty’s work can be restored, the immediate clarification of all unanswered questions is necessary.

It is only through full disclosure of how last August’s press release came about that a start be made to restore confidence. Amnesty International Netherlands awaits a response from the International Executive Board.
