Death Sentences and Executions 2012

10 april 2013

The world's journey to the abolition of the death penalty is continuing. Many political and judicial figures in several countries that still apply the death penalty have come to the view that the death penalty does not serve the purpose for wich it was intended, and are now advocating its abolition.

Addicted to Death: Executions for Drug Offences in Iran

15 december 2011

Executions of alleged drugs offenders have rocketed in Iran since mid-2010. They have continued at a high rate, with the Judiciary announcing a crackdown on drug trafficking in October 2010 and following amendments to the Anti-Narcotics Law that came into force in January 2011.

Asia: ADPAN: When justice fails: Thousands executed in Asia after unfair trials

7 december 2011

More people are executed in the Asia-Pacific region than in the rest of the world combined. Add to this the probability that they were executed following an unfair trial, and the gross injustice of this punishment becomes all too clear.

Death sentences and executions 2010

28 maart 2011

Death sentences and Executions in 2009

30 maart 2010

This document summarizes Amnesty International's global research on the use of the death penalty in 2009. More than two-thirds of the countries of the world have abolished the death penalty in law or in practice. While 58 countries retained the death penalty in 2009, most did not use it. Eighteen countries were known to have carried out executions, killing a total of 714 people; however, this figure does not include the thousands of executions that were likely to have taken place in China, which again refused to divulge figures on its use of the death penalty.

'A Thousand People Face The Death Penalty in Iraq'

1 augustus 2009

Nigeria: Waiting for the hangman

21 oktober 2008

More than 720 men and 11 women are under sentence of death in Nigeria’s prisons. They have one thing in common, beyond not knowing when they will be put to death. They are poor. From their first contact with the police, through the trial process, to seeking pardon, those with the fewest resources are at a serious disadvantage. Amnesty International and the Nigerian NGO Legal Defence and Assistance Project (LEDAP) are calling on the Nigerian authorities to declare a moratorium on executions, in line with the recommendations of its own experts.

Iran: End executions by stoning

18 januari 2008
