Trump-Macron Meeting Highlights Urgency of Welcoming Refugees

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, U.S. President Trump is visiting Paris to meet with French President Macron for Bastile Day in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I. Trump and Macron are expected to hold talks on Syria and counterterrorism efforts, among other issues. Amnesty International USA senior director of campaigns, Naureen Shah, issued this statement: “While Presidents Trump and Macron celebrate Bastile Day, the lives of millions of refugees from all over the world hang in the balance.

It is unconscionable for the U.S. to continue to arm governments that violate international law while simultaneously closing its borders to those fleeing the violence it helps to escalate. Trump and Macron must publicly commit to protecting civilians in Syria while also welcoming refugees from Syria and around the world who are forced to flee their homes.”
