French elections: Respect for the rights of all is essential for a just and free society that guarantees citizens’ safety

Following the first round of the presidential election, Amnesty International France urges the two candidates to make a public commitment to uphold the rights of all people and invites the public to support this call. Human rights are neither a threat nor a hindrance to individuals’ safety, but rather underpin the rule of law and are an essential precondition for an open and peaceful society.

“People’s safety can only be ensured by guaranteeing everyone’s human rights. Human rights protect us; we must protect them,” said Camille Blanc, President of Amnesty International France.

“Amnesty International France is calling on the candidates to strongly affirm their commitment to fundamental rights. This is a duty of all political leaders, but especially the future President of the Republic. We remain alert to defend and protect human rights and are urging people to be vigilant and support us in this work.”

History and current events demonstrate that respect for human rights and the dignity of all people – the foundation of a free and just society – is non-negotiable. Once again, we must come together and unite to defend and protect those rights.
