Belgium: A significant step on road to recognising transgender rights

Following a vote by the Belgium parliament today on a government proposed bill to end mandatory sterilization of transgender people Fotis Filippou Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Campaigns said:

“Today’s decision is a significant step forward for transgender people who have fought long and hard for recognition of their most basic human rights and against mandatory sterilization and the pathologization of their gender identity.”

“However, despite an end to these invasive procedures and coercive practices, this is not an endpoint. More must still be done to achieve the goal of a quick, transparent and accessible procedure for legal gender recognition.”
