Two in person training sessions in Nairobi 2026

In June 2026, PHRP delivered two training sessions on policing and human rights at Amnesty’s regional office in Nairobi, Kenya.

The first session was an in-depth training for researchers and campaigners from Amnesty’s East and South East Africa office and Amnesty Nigeria. It covered a broad range of policing‑related topics, including law enforcement in situations of armed conflict, the use of force and firearms, less lethal weapons, the facilitation of assemblies, arrest and detention, torture and ill‑treatment, counter‑terrorism, discrimination, and accountability. The training focused on how the international human rights framework translates into human rights‑compliant policing in practice. It also explored how to analyse and assess policing realities from a human rights perspective, and how to identify concrete reforms needed to improve compliance. Participants, working across more than 15 countries in the region, brought diverse experiences and challenges, which were integrated into the sessions through case studies, practical exercises, and group work.

The second training was a basic training delivered to colleagues working in campaigns, media, and communications from Amnesty sections (including Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa and Zimbabwe) and from the East/South and West Africa Regional Offices. It provided basic understanding of policing, addressed challenges related to terminology and messaging, as well as responding quickly and appropriately to emerging policing situations. The training was highly interactive, with a strong focus on practical exercises and peer exchange and provided a valuable opportunity for cross‑regional learning among colleagues who do not often have the chance to meet.
