Georgia: Amnesty International launches global campaign demanding justice for arrested protestors and accountability for violent suppression of protests by police

Amnesty International is launching the global campaign Demand accountability and justice for protesters in Georgia on 1 July to demand justice for demonstrators in Georgia, and accountability for the violent suppression by police since November 2024, of peaceful protests against repressive laws and the suspension of the EU accession process.

The ongoing crackdown on the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression has seen protesters subjected to unlawful force by police, arbitrary arrests, torture and other ill-treatment, including gendered reprisals. Many have been detained and imprisoned following unfair trials. Despite the brutal violence against protesters, not a single police officer has been held accountable to date.

“The aim of our global campaign is to express solidarity with protesters in Georgia and to demand accountability for police use of unlawful force,” said Denis Krivosheev, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia.
