Programme Assistant (volunteer)

We are looking for a Programme Assistant (volunteer) Amnesty International’s Police and Human Rights Programme (PHRP).

Where will you work?

At Amnesty International Netherlands, we work every day towards one clear goal: protecting human rights worldwide. We believe that everyone has the right to freedom, equality, and justice, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances. Amnesty conducts research, takes action, and supports human rights defenders around the world.

The organization has more than 280,000 members and donors in The Netherlands. The office in Amsterdam employs 120 employees and 32 volunteers and interns. As Amnesty International, we strive to reflect society.

As a Police and Human Rights Programme Assistant (Volunteer), you will support the Police and Human Rights Programme (PHRP) in its day-to-day work. This team organizes training on policing and human rights and provides technical expertise and advice to Amnesty International colleagues around the world. We also publish thematic papers that analyse human rights concerns relating to policing, explain the applicable international human rights laws and standards, and identify good practices from around the world that contribute to greater respect for human rights.

What will you be doing?

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the organization of online and in-person workshops, training sessions and expert meetings with Amnesty International offices and other national and international organizations.
  • Helping to develop social media content, videos and other materials on policing and human rights.
  • Regularly updating our Police and Human Rights Resources database with relevant documents.
  • Conducting research on policing-related topics as needed.

Who are we looking for?

  • You enjoy helping to organise events, meetings, workshops and training sessions.
  • You are able to deliver high-quality work within agreed deadlines.
  • You enjoy conducting research and working with information.
  • You are a collaborative team player who can also work independently when needed.
  • You can set priorities and manage your time effectively.
  • You are available for 8 to 16 hours per week for a minimum of six months.
  • You are fluent in English. Knowledge of Spanish or French is highly desirable.
  • You support Amnesty International’s mission and objectives and identify with the values we have agreed upon: reliability, equality, respect, and dedication.
We are committed to creating an organisation in which everyone feels welcome and able to contribute. To strengthen the diversity of our team, we particularly encourage applications from candidates with different cultural backgrounds and lived experiences.

What does Amnesty International offer?

  • Meaningful learning experience: You will make a difference at one of the world’s largest human rights organizations and have the opportunity to participate in (human rights) training sessions and various Amnesty events.
  • Development and support: You will have the space to develop yourself and be guided by experienced colleagues who provide feedback and support.
  • Professional network: You will build a network of passionate professionals within the human rights sector.
  • Pleasant workplace: Located in the heart of Amsterdam on the Keizersgracht, our office offers access to a beautiful courtyard garden.
  • The flexibility to combine working from home with at least eight hours per week at the Amnesty International office in Amsterdam.

We value diversity and know that our differences make us stronger. As a volunteer, you are welcome to bring your unique ideas and perspectives to our organization!
