Zambia: Authorities must investigate escalating attacks on journalists and media freedom

Amnesty International and the Zambia Free Press Initiative (FPI) expresses deep concern over the assault of Power News Network journalist Alfonso Kasongo in Lusaka’s Linda Compound, Chilanga District, on 19 April 2026, and call on the Zambian authorities to urgently ensure a prompt, independent, impartial and effective investigation into the incident and bring all those responsible to justice.

Alfonso Kasongo was attacked while reporting on a gathering organised by the ruling party United Party for National Development (UPND). During the meeting, a young man threw stones at the main table and was captured by UPND members who severely beat him up. When the ruling party members saw that Kasongo was recording, they turned their attention on him. Video footage circulating online shows Kasongo identifying himself as a journalist and pleading with the attackers to stop. Despite this, the assault continued, with the attackers using batons and metal rods. Kasongo reported that while he was overwhelmed by the group, he managed to run from those that carried taser guns. Kasongo sustained minor injuries on his neck and received medical treatment.

This attack constitutes a serious violation of the right to freedom of expression and the right to security of the person. Journalists must be able to carry out their work without fear of violence, intimidation or reprisals.
