Programme Assistant (volunteer) Amnesty International’s Police and Human Rights Programme (PHRP)
Amnesty International is a global movement of over 10 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. Amnesty conducts research, generates action, and supports human rights defenders worldwide. That is why we look for colleagues who embrace diversity and inclusion. In the Netherlands, the organization has over 250.000 members and donors. The Amsterdam office employs 120 paid staff and 40 volunteers.
We are recruiting a Programme Assistant (volunteer) Amnesty International’s Police and Human Rights Programme (PHRP) for 8 – 16 hours per week. Are you interested in police and human rights? Then we are looking for you to join our team!
What will you be doing?
As a Police and Human Rights Volunteer, you will support the team in our daily work. For example, we organize training on police and human rights and provide technical expertise and advice to Amnesty colleagues around the world on policing-related issues. We further release thematic papers that analyse the relevant human rights issues and concerns, summarise the fundamental human rights rules and standards applicable, and identify good practices that have proven to contribute to better human rights compliance.
You will:
- Provide support to the organisation of PHRP’s (online) workshops, training and expert meetings with Amnesty International offices and other relevant international and national organisations.
- Provide support to the development of social media assets, videos and other relevant materials on police and human rights.
- Update on a regular basis our online database with relevant documents related to policing and human rights: http://policehumanrightsresources.org/
- Carry out research-related tasks on various police topics, when needed.
- Provide support in developing materials on policing for the global Protect the Protest Campaign.
About our work
Amnesty International analyses and reports on human rights violations during police work around the world. Excessive use of force and firearms, human rights violations during protests, arbitrary arrest and detention, ill-treatment and torture are only a few of Amnesty International’s concerns. While acknowledging the vast challenges police face in their daily work, including risks for their health and life, it is Amnesty International’s firm belief that it is possible to carry out good and efficient policing in full compliance with international and national human rights laws and standards. In our publications, we provide constructive recommendations on the possible improvement of policing-related legislation and procedures, preventive measures, training, and accountability mechanisms.
What will you bring?
- You enjoy organizing events and contributing to (online) workshops and training.
- You can deliver quality work within strict deadlines.
- You enjoy doing research.
- You are a team player and also able to work independently, establish priorities and organize your time accordingly.
- You can commit for at least 6 months and be available for 8 – 16 hours per week.
- You are fluent in English and knowledge of Spanish or French is highly desirable.
- You share the objectives of Amnesty International.
We continue to work on an organization where all talent feels at home. For a diverse formation of our team, we are particularly interested in candidates with a multicultural background.
