Stop racism, not people: Racial profiling and immigration control in Spain

In a multicultural country such as Spain, someone who does not “look Spanish” can be stopped by police as often as four times in the same day, not for stealing, or being violent, but to prove their identity.

It makes no difference whether that person has been in Spain for 10 days or 10 years, whether he/she has Spanish citizenship. People who belong to ethnic minorities have to prove that they have regular migration status in Spain, at any time of the day or night, whether they are on their way to work, to pick up their children from school or going for a walk in town.
