Shattered Lives: Torture and other ill-treatment by law enforcement officials in Tajikistan

Torture and other ill-treatment remain widespread in pre-trial detention facilities in Tajikistan. People are sometimes subjected to
torture or other ill-treatment by police and security officers in order to “solve” crimes by obtaining confessions, or to obtain money from them or their relatives. In some instances, this treatment has resulted in deaths in custody. The general climate of impunity keeps such abuse virtually unchecked.
