bombings that have claimed an unconfirmed number of lives and seriously
injured many more people in London today. Explosions have been reported at
six Underground stations and on one bus.

Amnesty International vraagt Minister Verdonk ruimhartig te zijn ten opzichte van asielzoekers uit Srebrenica

Op de tiende verjaardag van de moord op omstreeks 8.000 Bosnische moslims uit Srebrenica, vraagt Amnesty International aan Minister Verdonk om ruimhartig zijn ten opzichte van de ruim 200 asielzoekers uit Srebrenica die in Nederland verblijven.
Daarnaast vraagt de mensenrechtenorganisatie om berechting van de daders, veilige teugkeer van de slachtoffers en het open houden van het Joegoslavië Tribunaal na 2010.

New constitution provides sweeping immunity for high level officials

The new Interim Consitition for Sudan, ratified today, provides sweeping immunity for the highest levels of the Sudanese government and demonstrates that the government is not serious about combating impunity, said Amnesty International.

The organization added that this provides further evidence that the government of Sudan should not sideline the International Criminal Court in favour of national prosecutions of possible war crimes committed in the armed conflict in Darfur.

Freedom for 200 but many more still in prison

Amnesty International welcomes the release from prison today of more than 200 political prisoners, including more than 100 from Insein Prison in Yangon.

"We are happy to hear of the release of prisoners of conscience, many of whom have been imprisoned for more than a decade," said Catherine Baber, Deputy Asia Program Director of Amnesty International.

Illegal arms exports fuelling killings, mass rape and torture

Large quantities of weapons and ammunition from the Balkans and eastern Europe are flowing into Africa's conflict-ridden Great Lakes region, despite evidence of their use in gross human rights violations, according to new research issued today.

The shipments have continued to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) despite a peace process initiated in 2002 and a United Nations arms embargo.

Deliver on human rights: Amnesty’s appeal to the UK presidency of the EU

Amnesty International says its human rights proposals to the UK Presidency, released today in Brussels and London, add up to an ambitious program that would strengthen the EU’s leading role on human rights both at home and abroad.
