Death threat to campaigner's family

22 november 2004

The family of the deceased human rights campaigner Munir must be protected, said Amnesty International after his wife received a death threat at their family home.

A decapitated and dismembered chicken was sent to Munir's wife Sucawati on Saturday 20 November, along with a note warning, "Be careful!!!!! Do not connect the TNI [Indonesian military] to the death of Munir. Do you want to end up like this?"

Successful elections mask turmoil in Aceh (NAD)

7 oktober 2004

As the rest of Indonesia celebrates its first direct presidential
elections, its westernmost province is in turmoil. Political killings,
torture, and armed raids on homes and villages are ruining the Acehnese
people's lives and forcing hundreds of them to flee.

Amnesty International condemns Jakarta bomb attack

9 september 2004

Amnesty International strongly condemns today’s bomb attack outside the
Australian Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Attacks on civilians can never be justified and are prohibited by
international law. Amnesty International calls for the perpetrators to be
brought promptly to justice in proceedings that meet international
standards.

The organization extends its deepest sympathy to the victims -- many
of whom are Indonesian -- and to their families and friends.

ICG expulsion, the latest effort to restrict freedom of expression

3 juni 2004

"The decision to expel two international staff members of the International
Crisis Group (ICG) this week is the latest in a growing number of acts by
the Indonesian government that are restricting the possibility of reporting
on the political, security and human rights situation in the country," said
Amnesty International.

The two ICG staff members were ordered on Monday to leave Indonesia,
allegedly because they have violated the terms of their work permits.
However, their forced removal appears to have resulted from complaints by

Human rights sacrificed to security in NAD (Aceh)

11 mei 2004

People in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) now live in constant fear of
killings, torture and arrest. One year on since the Indonesian government
imposed martial law, violence has become so commonplace it is almost
impossible for people to live a normal life. Amnesty International is
calling on the Indonesian government to stop sacrificing human rights for
the sake of security.

"Nearly all aspects of the lives of ordinary citizens are adversely
affected by the military emergency," said Amnesty International. "People

Levering korvetten aan Indonesische marine is onverantwoord

10 februari 2004

'Een besluit van de Nederlandse regering om een wapenexportvergunning te verlenen voor de levering van vier korvetten voor de Indonesische marine is onverantwoord', aldus Amnesty International.

Naleving van mensenrechten is een belangrijk criterium van het Europees en daarmee Nederlands Wapenexportbeleid.

New prisoners of conscience in the post-Suharto era

9 juli 2003

(Jakarta, July 10, 2003) -- In separate reports released today, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch called for the release of all prisoners of conscience in Indonesia and for the repeal of legislation used to prosecute and imprison activists engaged in peaceful political expression. A series of amnesties following the forced resignation of President Suharto in May 1998 led to the release of all prisoners of conscience and pledges by the Indonesian authorities to end politically motivated prosecutions.

Safety of civilians must be the priority

19 mei 2003

Following the break down of a cease-fire and renewed military operations
against armed separatists in the Indonesian province of Nanggroe Aceh
Darussalam (NAD), Amnesty International today called on both sides to the
conflict to take concrete measures to protect the civilian population.

"We fear for all Acehnese civilians following return to war," the
organization stressed.

The Indonesian government declared martial law in NAD at midnight of
19 May after last minute talks to rescue the five-month-old cease-fire

Activist's arrest could undermine Aceh cease-fire

14 februari 2003

Amnesty International called for the immediate release of leading political
activist, Muhammad Nazar, who was arrested today in Nanggroe Aceh
Darussalem (NAD) and warned that the detention of activists risks
discrediting the two month old cease-fire agreement in the province.

"The cease-fire agreement, although fragile, has been successful in
reducing levels of violence between the two conflicting parties in NAD, but
ultimately it will mean nothing to ordinary Acehnese if they continue to
experience human rights violations."

Human rights are everyone's business in Papua

26 september 2002

In a new report released today, Amnesty International warned that companies conducting business in Papua cannot ignore human rights. The organization urged the Indonesian government and companies with operations in the Indonesian province to take responsibility to protect and uphold human rights.
