Belarus defies Council of Europe call for a moratorium

The sentence was pronounced less than a week after the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly voted on 23 June in favour of restoring the Special Guest status to the Parliament of Belarus on the condition that Belarus declares a moratorium on the execution of the death penalty. “The death sentence is clear evidence that there is no “de-facto moratorium” in Belarus as has been claimed by the government, and that we need to remain alert to the possibility that they continue to carry out death sentences”, said Nicola Duckworth, Director of the Europe and Central Asia Programme.

‘Er zou in de 21e eeuw geen plaats meer moeten zijn voor onthoofding, elektrocutie, ophanging, de dodelijke injectie, het vuurpeleton en steniging,’ zei Irene Khan, secretaris-generaal van Amnesty International. ‘De doodstraf is de meest ultieme vorm van wrede, onmenselijke en onterende bestraffing.’ Amnesty publiceert vandaag een wereldwijd overzicht van in 2008 opgelegde doodstraffen en executies. Daaruit blijkt dat tussen januari en december van dat jaar ten minste 2390 mensen in 25 landen werden geëxecuteerd.

Belarus: Demonstrators beaten during Freedom Day march

Up to two thousand people had gathered in a square in the centre of the city to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the short-lived independence of Belarus in 1918, which is now referred to by the political opposition as Freedom Day. The authorities had not sanctioned the demonstration and President Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s government had vowed to prevent any public action to mark the occasion. Police reportedly surrounded the demonstrators and after announcing that the gathering was illegal moved in to disband them.

Actie voor Wit-Rusland bij kwalificatie-duel

Tijdens de actie zetten zij een symbolisch tentenkamp op aan het Catharinaplein in het centrum van Eindhoven. Voorafgaand aan de wedstrijd halen actievoerders handtekeningen op en delen ze bandana's uit met de tekst 'Wit-Rusland vrij' in het Russisch. Bij de actie zijn ook FNV-voorzitter Agnes Jongerius en Amnesty-directeur Eduard Nazarski. Wit-Rusland wordt wel de laatste dictatuur van Europa genoemd. De vrijheid in dit land met 10 miljoen inwoners is ver te zoeken. Mensenrechten worden voortdurend geschonden.

Belarus: Detentions and beatings continue after elections

108 people were detained on the night of 19 – 20 March and a further 20 were detained on 20 – 21 March, according to the Belarus human rights organization Vyasna. The detentions are continuing and no complete figures are available, but Vyasna estimates that in all 400 arrests may have taken place throughout the country. “The Belarusian authorities have yet again demonstrated a total disregard for freedom of expression.

Belarus: Tightening the screws on dissent

Ahead of presidential elections in Belarus scheduled for 19 March 2006, the authorities are delivering another assault on human rights. Opposition activists are being detained and sentenced for the legitimate expression of their political views while the authorities have tightened up legislation to clamp down on civil society, stifling human rights in the process. Amnesty International is launching a campaign to show solidarity with the victims of this current clampdown on civil society and opposition forces.

Suppressing the last voices of peaceful dissent

Amnesty International is concerned that the Belarusian authorities have become intolerant of any public criticism or dissent. The rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly are enshrined in various international human rights treaties, in particular the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Belarus is bound to uphold and observe. Yet it is with growing concern that Amnesty International has observed that action based on peaceful political beliefs in Belarus has become near to impossible.

The Belarusian authorities have once again violated the right to peaceful protest for political opponents and human rights activists, Amnesty international and FIDH said today amid reports of arbitrary arrests and ill-treatment of demonstrators. For the past two days hundreds of people have been protesting in the centre of Minsk against the results of parliamentary elections and a controversial referendum that lifted restrictions on President Lukashenka’s term of office.

The last executioners

Belarus and Uzbekistan are the last countries from the former Soviet Union that carry out the death penalty. They are the last remaining obstacles to turning Europe and Central Asia into a death penalty - free zone, Amnesty International said today launching its latest report Belarus and Uzbekistan: the last executioners. The trend towards abolition in the former Soviet space.
